Alexander, Do You Have Magic that is more Rah-Rah?

Couple of days ago, I received an enquiry and was really excited to share my work with the Esplanade. But I was immediately shot down with a question:

“Can your magic be more rah-rah?”

If you know me as a person, you will know that by nature, I am not very excitable. I am enthusiastic about many thing but I hardly exclaim it in a frantic way.

I had to wrap my mind around what rah-rah meant, and then I realized that what they are looking for is not what I can or will offer.

At the end of the conversation I figured that the client was looking more for a Tron Dance type of performance as opposed to my style of magic.

And that is okay!

Tron Dance

Because ultimately, when a performer has found his/her own style and personality, it will guide your path. It is integral to say no to anything apart from that. I am very certain that while my style is suited for a more sophisticated and intellectual audience, it will not cater to a “Rah-Rah”/Mass Dance type of crowd.

And that is okay!

When you say yes to everything, it becomes harder and harder for brands to find a correct alignment and fit with you.

iPad Magician Luxury Brand Alexander Yuen

I am absolutely thankful that my style and character fits well with my clients. Thank you for letting me, be me.

It is super fun to create magic for brands. Some time back, I was involved in creating iPad Magic for F&N Magnolia’s Taro Milk. The idea was to incorporate street magic and iPad Magic.

We hit the streets in Orchard Road and did several magic pieces for the passer-bys. We even manage to get a crowd for some of the acts.

At the end of the project, we managed to get 132K Views and 126 Shares on Facebook! This is a huge success for the client and for myself :)

Esplanade Presents: If You Can Imagine - iPad Theatrical Magic Show (10 Fun Facts)

From “If You Can Imagine” - Miser’s Dream

From “If You Can Imagine” - Miser’s Dream

If You Can Imagine plays for its final 2 runs for Esplanade this coming Sunday (2nd June) at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

The previous run last Sunday was received with fantastic reception from laypeople, magicians and people in the arts.

From “If You Can Imagine” - Starry Night

From “If You Can Imagine” - Starry Night

Here are 10 fun facts about the show:

  1. Total number of iPads used in this show is 5. Alexander owns 6 iPad Pros, 2 iPad Minis, 3 iPhones and 1 iPad Air.

  2. The concept of this show to Esplanade was shared in the early 2018, but because Flipside festival went for a revamp in 2018, they did not have any magic acts involved. The whole discussion from concept to reality took 1 year and 6 months.

  3. Alexander’s Virtual x Reality (2015) was his first magic performance under Esplanade’s programming. Thereafter, Flipside had magic consecutively from 2016 and 2017, and stopped in 2018. And Alexander’s If You Can Imagine and Elephant in the Room is the first magic performances after the refresh.

  4. In the act, “The Three Kingdoms”, Alexander uses 2 lighters for the same type of magic effect, one at the start where he was recounting on his lonely childhood and one at the finale of his performance where he found peace. This is a subtle addition to hint that though the magic was the same, the effect it had on him was different.

  5. In the original ending of “If You Can Imagine”, Alexander would sit on his chair, and die. But after much discussion, it was modified because it needed a “family-friendly” ending.

  6. The first version of the opening act, “Miser’s Dream”, debut in Saudi Arabia’s Cisco Connect Conference in 2016. Back then it only used 1 iPad. In this current rendition, it uses 4 iPads.

  7. In his closing piece, except for the psychologist, Alexander refers to his actual friends when he talks of a lawyer who wants to be a musician, a doctor that wants to be a painter and a psychologist who wants to just do magic. The psychologist is a subtle reference to himself.

  8. The inspiration for Alexander’s “Starry Night” is a subtle homage to Alexander’s favorite book, “The Little Prince”. He makes 3 subtle reference of it in that act. The first is where he used an imagery close to the The Little Prince’s Planet and the other 2 is for you to find out :)

  9. In totality, Alexander took 2 months of programming the 5 acts that involved the iPad. He then took another 1.5 months for rehearsals.

  10. In his 4th Act called “Society”, Alexander laments about Society telling him to “Stop living in his mom’s basement and doing magic” was an actual thing that was said to him on a dinner date who found out that he was doing magic for a living. Despite knowing that Alexander has a Master’s Degree from NUS, she decided to scoff at him for simply doing what he loves.

  11. (Bonus Fact) Alexander will have to change his 2nd Act “Cocktails of Imagination” to another act for this coming Sunday’s performance because of NEA regulations that does not allow him to distribute unsealed drinks. But he promises that another act of the same theme will be replacing it.

Alexander will play again this Sunday, 2nd June

We just finished the first weekend of Flipside Festival in Esplanade and it was wonder!

Our Scratch Night performance called Elephant in the Room was well received by the lay audiences.

This show can be described as cerebral and gestalt. Because if you look at the individual pieces, it might not make a lot of sense. Only when the show is over, and on hindsight, the full picture forms.

We are playing again this Friday (31st May) at 9,45pm at the Annexe Studio. See you there!

Singapore Magic in Art's Spotlight: 2 Shows by Esplanade Presents (Flipside Festival 2019) [Details here]

If You Can Imagine by Alexander Yuen iPad Magic

It is not every day that magic gets feature in a prestigious Art venue like the Esplanade. Though I did a show a by the Esplanade Presents programme in 2015 (Virtual x Reality), it is truly a feat for us to do 2 shows under the Esplanade Presents feature! It was not easy to be able to convince Esplanade to feature magic.

As I have learnt they had many magicians apply for the same programme but most of them lack artistic rigor and look too similar to a dinner and dance programme.

My involvement in Arts Festivals and directing magic content allowed me to see magic in a different way. I see magic as a vehicle to move narratives and emotions. Moving beyond just entertainment, magic can truly mean more than just the giggles and laughs.

Elephant in The Room Alexander Yuen Anderson Chua Flipside Festival

The shows, If You Can Imagine and Elephant in the Room are distinct pieces of magic show. Though they are both directed by me, they both have qualities that capture the hearts and minds.

If You Can Imagine (26th May & 2nd June: 6.30pm | 7.30pm @ Concourse)

If You Can Imagine is one of the projects I have been working on for many years. It always starts off with a simple idea and then it grew to a 30 minute performance. This show uses multiple iPads for the magic and storytelling to move a narrative about imagination.

Conceptualizing the show took me about 3 months and the programming itself took me 4 months. This is quite a technology intensive show. And I can assure that if you have not seen multiple iPad Magic and story telling, this is one show you do not want to miss!

Here are the details in brief:

Esplanade Presents: If You Can Imagine

Venue: Esplanade’s Concourse

Date and Time: 26th May and 2nd June (6.30pm and 7.30pm)

Elephant in the Room (24th May & 31st May: 9.45pm @ Annexe Studios)

One of the best lessons when I was an undergraduate psychology student was learning about information processing and that once a person learns a valuable information, it can never be unseen.

This forms the backbone of Elephant in the Room

My objective with this show was to craft a performance that can be experienced before, during and after the show. Valuable bits of information, hidden in plain sight, are planted throughout the show. And when the finale comes, it comes as a satisfying revelation.

Together with Anderson, we crafted this show to have an intellectual slant to it. The show itself has a variety of unorthodox magic pieces and even a viewing gallery before the show begins (which is part of the show)

Come by and experience the Elephant in the Room for yourself!

Here are the details in brief:

Esplanade Presents: Elephant in the Room

Venue: Esplanade’s Annexe Studios (Next to Outdoor Theatre)

Date and Time: 24th and 31st May (9.45pm. Come by early at 9.15 onwards for seating!)

———-

I really hope to see you guys there for an amazing and artful experience. This will not be just “another magic show”, this will truly be an experience for you.

Directing the Directors: Training the Directors for Theatrical Illusion Show for 2000 pax

Picture this: the commanding presence of a magician on stage, mesmerizing his audience with grace and aplomb. Just last month, Meta Illusions had the pleasure of empowering the L2 directors of UOB, to do just that.

Image6.jpg

Welcome to the UOB GTO Dinner & Dance 2019, featuring the dazzling directors of UOB!

It’s one thing for a magician to craft a professional stage act for himself. It’s another to completely customize an entire show for a board of directors to perform, knowing full well that they wouldn’t have the prior experience either.

Of course, nothing is impossible here at Meta Illusions. With no time to lose, our team swiftly kick-started the creative process with the directors

Meta Illusions Director Show Magic Illusions

Together, Meta Illusions and UOB agreed on an exciting 4-act performance, one that would build up to a bold, dramatic finale.  But then next came the toughest bit: training. So over 4 intense 4 hour sessions, we worked closely with them, bringing them up to speed with the dos and don’ts of being a stage magician.

UOB Director Corporate Training

But it wasn’t all fun and games with this crash-course on magic! With our close guidance and supervision, the directors worked hard and gradually familiarised themselves with the props, motions and sequences designed for their upcoming show.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, and magic is certainly no exception. With their dedication and our direction, these budding magicians learned the ropes and were able to pick up the subtleties fairly quickly. Diligently, they also learned from their mistakes and not before long, were confident and fully ready to take on their Dinner & Dance stage.

Wefie of Performance Night

A performance is only as good as the amount of preparation poured into it. On the actual day, we promptly made our way to the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre to get started early with the background work.

Rehearsal for Dnd UOB

Lights, Camera, Action!

With Alexander Yuen coordinating the entire process, the team huddled together for a quick brief. Under a tight schedule leading up to the main event, we had mere hours to set the stage, lights and sounds, as well as run final rehearsals with the directors. The clock was ticking!

Meta Illusions Theater DnD Magic

The stage was the key platform for our budding magicians to shine that night, so it was only critical that we set it right early for the full performance. Liaising carefully with the lights team, we ensured that it would be precisely illuminated for a captivating night of magic!

Magic Illusion Show Singapore

The team began arranging the various props, making sure that everything was aligned clearly and visibly for the night’s audience. This show was made for them after all!

Magic Illusion Show Corporate UOB

Here at Meta Illusions, it’s the small things that count. Attention to detail was absolutely crucial, so minor adjustments were constantly made until we could get all the perfect arrangements in order.

Meta Illusions Alexander Yuen Illusion Magic Show

With multiple props about to be cycled in and out of the 4-act show in a flash, we worked readily to ensure that they could transit smoothly and would function perfectly when it came down it.

Singapore Magician Corporate Illusions

With most of the work done we had one last piece to wrap it all up: the ultimate finale!

VIP Appearance Magic Show

and expertise, the team was able to improvise, rectifying the problems and adapting to an unfamiliar stage set promptly.

And finally, without further ado, the L2 directors took to the stage and dazzled the guests with their spectacular stage magic!

Finale Grand Magic Show Singapore

We dare say that the L2 directors knocked it out of the park with this one! A round of applause to them!

None of this could’ve been accomplished without the efforts of both Team Meta Illusions and UOB. Working closely with them was as fruitful as it was delightful, and we hope that everyone had an enjoyable night of magic at the Dinner & Dance!

Signing off,

Team Meta Illusions

Singapore Tourism Board: Telling the Singapore Story in Australia (Singapore Social)

One of the greatest project I undertook this year (though it is really early in the year), is with Singapore Tourism Board.

STB Singapore Alexander Yuen iPad Magic

The idea was to craft a routine with the iPad to curate and give a taste of what Singapore is to the Australians in Sydney and Melbourne.

There were a few things that was uniquely Singapore, the food, the night life and our outstanding cocktail bar scene.

I wrecked my brains and stretched my imagination to come out with a cogent story and routine with the iPad. I was delighted to be confirmed and given a chance to fly to Sydney and Melbourne for the first time (I know it is hard to believe that I have never step foot on Australian soil before!)

We traveled to a bar in Sydney located in the Shelbourne Hotel. It was a delight to see motifs of Singapore in a foreign place.

Passion Made Possible Australia

I engaged the guests who signed up for a cocktail and food pairing course by winner of Master Chef Australia Sashi Cheliah (who is a Singaporean based in Australia).

I also crafted a piece featuring cocktails from 2 of the World’s Best Bars which are located in Singapore, Native and Operation Dagger. It was a pleasure working with fellow craftsmen dedicated to their craft.

Amongst other things, I also did some of my iPad Magic to warm up the guests. It was a real treat for me to perform for the Australians who reacted wildly to the magic.

iPad Magic Australia

We then flew to Melbourne to perform at the Albion. This was where I got to meet Aussie footballer Danes Swan.

Danes Swan iPad Magic

He thoroughly enjoyed the magic, so much so that he posted a video of me performing my magic on his Instagram, getting raving comments of my wizardry!

The atmosphere in the Albion was more relaxed and less formal. The guests were ready to experience Singapore and have fun. I had so much fun sharing my magic with them!

iPad Magician The Albion

For a first timer in Australia, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Even more so when I get to share with the audiences a piece of Singapore. This made me feel proud as a true blue Singaporean. This is something that I will always cherish.

Some of you might know that I have a Master Degree in Psychology and have published a few papers in Psychology (Peer Reviewed) Journals as well.

I decided to make full use of this knowledge I have to develop a show based on psychology, body language and research.

Here is a snippet off a show:

During the Chinese New Year festivities, I was engaged by Pan Pacific Hotel Group to perform once again at their Chinese New Year luncheon. I was booked by them last year for my iPad Illusion Show and was delighted to be called back. Obviously, I had to present something different this time.

In this interactive show, I explain how to tell if a person is lying or telling the truth. I also create synchronicity between my participants and occasionally creating very humorous moments.

“Dear Alexander

The pleasure was certainly ours !

Yes indeed the clients and our team enjoyed your session best :)  you are amazing !

Happy Chap Goh Meh and wishing you all the best in this New Year.”

Grand Illusions and Luxury Brands for Chinese New Year Celebrations

One of the best things about performing magic is that I get to interact with brands that I truly love. Last year, I did an event for Dunhill, managed by Lux Asia and they have gotten me back this year for their own Chinese New Year Celebration

In order to create a luxurious feel for the magic, I decided to debut one of my latest illusions called “(Desires) From The Other Dimension”. This piece is a slow and romantic piece about the desire for connection in a strange world. It is great for an event where ambiance and theme is the focus, perfect for Lux Asia.

Enjoy!

Chopard: Happiness (An Act on Happiness Thru Magic)

Immediately after my trip from Japan, I came back to Singapore to perform a customized performance on the theme Happiness.

This event was jointly organized by Cortina and Chopard, “The Pursuit of Happy-ness”. I was delighted (or should I say, happy) to be able to storyboard a performance like this for them. In my years as an undergraduate psychology student, I learnt many things about happiness in my positive psychology class. I had to justify my degree and this fell right into place for that!

I spoke about the Hedonistic Threadmill in which the pursuit of money in itself will lead to habituation and in fact, the lack of happiness. I exemplified this theme by performing a routine where I make money appear out of my iPad.

iPad Magician Chopard Asia

Then I also spoke about having close relationships and social support as fundamental to positive mental health.

As a finale, I summarized the points to consider when it comes to happiness by symbolizing happiness as a balloon on a string, I tore the pieces of the string up sharing that having just one component of happiness is not enough. I magically fused them into one string, and share that a wholesome approach is the best.

I guess you can say that I had a great time, and it was truly, a happy ending!

The guests consisted of theco-founders in TWG, Mr Taha Bouqdib, Ms Maranda Barnes and Mr Rith Aum-Stievenard. Also present was the CEO of OSIM Mr Ron Sim. It was a delight to be able to present my iPad Magic for them and their colleagues.

I really wanted to do it because of the values that Chopard hold as a luxury brand (their commitment to 100% Ethical Gold) and that they exist also as a family business (From Karin Scheufele to her children (and current CEOs): Caroline Scheufele and Karl Scheufele).

For this event, I designed a showcase to tell the Chopard’s Brand Story with 4 of my iPads. The audiences consisted of celebrities and socialites. I was really flattered when Zoe Tay remembers me from the previous event where I also performed for a luxury brand.

In fact, Ms Caroline Scheufele herself was present at the event. During the bit where I shared about Karin Scheufele, Ms Caroline Scheufele exclaimed in joy to the audience that that was her mother. It was a really sweet moment for me to be able to create such a precious moment through my magic.

The magic and storytelling was incredibly well received. It was wonderful to be able to share their brand story in an engaging and experiential manner!

Star Struck at Bvlgari: Magic for Zoe Tay, Fann Wong and Sam Willows

I previously spoke about how performing magic for luxury brands and how it requires a good fit in terms of image of the magician and brand as well. And it brings me great joy (and a nice pat on my own back) to be able to perform for Bvlgari again. This time, at their prestigious Pop Up Event where they invited Zoe Tay, Fann Wong and Sam Willows.

On top of top Singapore celebrities and A-listers, there were many socialites who attended the event. The iPad Magic performed had to be of high calibre and classy.

It can be quite nerve wrecking to perform for celebrities, and I actually had to regroup myself before approaching them. At the end, I realised that magic broke the ice and they react like how most people would too.

An excellent night it was, a truly wonderful privilege to share my magic :)

F1 x EDB Party: Passion Made Possible

Final Race Day for F1 2019!

And I got to watch the race (and perform) at the gorgeous view from National Gallery. This year, I was invited to EDB’s F1 Party to perform and showcase my magic to the esteemed guests.

Apart from making a model of the Vanda Electrics Dendrobium appear (Singapore’s First Electric Sports Car) from the iPad, I also entertained the guests with my iPad. You can see how thoroughly entertained the guests are from the magic.

Hope you had a great final race day too!
