Couple of days ago, I received an enquiry and was really excited to share my work with the Esplanade. But I was immediately shot down with a question:
“Can your magic be more rah-rah?”
If you know me as a person, you will know that by nature, I am not very excitable. I am enthusiastic about many thing but I hardly exclaim it in a frantic way.
I had to wrap my mind around what rah-rah meant, and then I realized that what they are looking for is not what I can or will offer.
At the end of the conversation I figured that the client was looking more for a Tron Dance type of performance as opposed to my style of magic.
And that is okay!
Because ultimately, when a performer has found his/her own style and personality, it will guide your path. It is integral to say no to anything apart from that. I am very certain that while my style is suited for a more sophisticated and intellectual audience, it will not cater to a “Rah-Rah”/Mass Dance type of crowd.
And that is okay!
When you say yes to everything, it becomes harder and harder for brands to find a correct alignment and fit with you.
I am absolutely thankful that my style and character fits well with my clients. Thank you for letting me, be me.
