iPad Magician: Mercedes Benz The New GLA Launch

The all New Mercedes Benz GLA is a charming, sleek and family friendly car. I was invited to entertain the guests at the launch of the car. 

I specially designed an app on the iPad to make a car model appear. The guests reacted with much delight after seeing the iPad magic. This also gave me a chance to nudge them to check out the real car on display.

Aside from that app, I also designed an iPad Magic app that displays the hashtags of the event and they appear magically in the cards that the guests were holding.

Luxury Time Piece: Roger Dubuis x Pirelli Watch Launch

Imagine the heat of the F1 race combined with the timeless charm of a luxurious time piece, what do you get?

Roger Dubuis x Pirelli gives you a hint of that. Using the Pirelli tyres of the winning F1 car, Roger Dubuis crafted the finest combination of adventure and elegance.

I was invited on both occasions to showcase the watch in a novel way that would intrigue the guests and tempt them to have a hands on experience with it. Telling the story of how the winning tyres were used in the crafting of the watch, I made the watch appear out of the IPad.

Alongside with this customized magic, I performed my other magic on the iPad as well as the night progressed.

The best part of this launch was that I was able to use my magic to effectively tell and curate the brand's story through the iPad. Doing that allows the guests to remember the brand and giving it a personality.

Directorial Debut: A Theatre Production With Science and Magic

In the last 3 months, I was involved in a small theatre production with NTU's School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. 

I was engaged as a consultant and director for the play. The concept was "to make the freshmen feel inspired by science" and it should involve a wizard learning magic fueled by science.

Though conceptually simply, the process was not that simple. 

My role involved understanding what the various majors had to offer. For example, the physics department had an intriguing experiment where a barrel would roll up slope against gravity and the math department had a mind reading card trick based on math principles. I had to spend substantial periods of time conceptualizing a plot and resolution involving these experiments. 

Once I had the general concept in mind, I had to devise a larger plot that would string the whole show together. The plot was refined to : "Disdained Wizard from Hogwarts meets Wizards of SPMS" or simply "Sorcery versus Science".

After crafting the script, my team and I did performance workshops and vocal training for the professors. 

At the end of the grueling 3 months, we finally made it and created a one of a kind production for the freshmen!

Restaurant Andre: Gastronomic Circus De La Vida (Curating Food with Magic)

It was truly a great privilege to work with Andre Chiang of Restaurant Andre. This is a 2 Michelin Star Establishment. This man is a master at what he does, and his cool temperament is a huge contrast to say... Gordon Ramsey. 

When you walk into the restaurant, there is an air of poshness but yet unpretentious. I met Andre personally to talk about a collaboration where I would design magic to introduce each dish. This could be in the form of making the dish appear, or a crucial ingredient appear. This was a one day only presentation for Gastronomic Circus De La Vida.

Apart from designing the magic, I was also involved in teaching the waiting staff how to execute the easier magic so that they can do it as well. The magic we created was focused and to the point. Every magic sequence is specific to the dish, there was no need for generic magic in this settle.

On the day itself, I disguised myself as a waiter and greeted the guests. Amongst many things, I made a bottle of wine appear as well as make coffee beans appear out of my phone. Check out this video from a guest from Thailand!

Truly a wonderful and enriching experience working and learning from a master from a different discipline.

After the event, I got the feedback, even though the magic was the most expensive part of the event, Pam and Andre(the chefs) said that it was the most impressive and the one that is most worth it. They were really happy with Alex's performance

What does it mean to be called a "Magician"?

(Taken from my letter to my team at Meta Illusions)

"I offer you no quick answer to this question. But after 15 years of magic, I think I am moving closer to figuring it out.

This is something I would like you to think about from now on and for the rest of your magic journey. While the term "Magician" is loosely thrown around and has become synonymous to "prankster", "trickster" and "con-man"; the true essence of a magician is beyond that. 

One can be a person who does tricks, specializing in difficult manoeuvres with his/her hands but unfortunately, can never rise up to the ranks of magician. 

One can simply bring attention to the marvels of the world without difficult sleight of hand, and inch closer to the ranks of magician. But not just yet. 

To be called a magician, in its purest form, one needs to create and curate these acts of marvels, and bring them forth to their audience. On its own, it is not enough to just create or curate. 

Many of us fall short of being a "Magician" in its purest form. Perhaps the concept is too idealistic to be humanly achieved. However, the reality is that most do not even try. Gratified by the admiration of industrial peers, we reduce magic into moves and techniques. Magic is no longer about transporting audiences into a world where fantasy blends into reality, it loses its essence of inspiring and creating the sense of wonder. It becomes about self gratification and the (sad) comfort in knowing something that your audiences do not.

The diversion path is long and arduous, and more often than not, you would be mocked by amateur "magicians", with the "I am better than you" attitude. After exhausting their pool of disdained lay audiences with their obsession with moves and manoeuvres, they sadly graduate to a magic audience. The good news is, as long as we keep striving towards this ideal, to bring our audiences to the edge of reality, we can make the world a better place, inch by inch, moments by moments, we can pat ourselves on the back and call ourselves "Magician".

Because as long as we keep in mind that magic is about what the audiences experience, you have earned the right to call yourself a Magician. And I hope you continuously inspire and make the world a better place, in your own magical ways."

iPad Magic Special: Indian Wedding in the Heart of Bangkok

This month I was cordially invited to perform for an exquisite Wedding Banquet for an Indian family all the way in the Land of Smiles – Thailand. I was extremely pleased that I was invited to grace this joyous occasion of theirs. I packed my bags, booked my flight, and buckled my seat-belts together with my wonderful crew member, Elijah.

The Wedding Banquet, unlike a traditional Chinese wedding, spans across the length of two days, of which, was held in two different locations. These banquet or parties thrown by the family, are highly exquisite, prestigious and above all, out of this world. You should have seen the quality of the food, furnishing and ambiance provided by the management. No expenses were spared from the client; they were highly serious about getting the best there is for this event! They even had all their relatives in India flown in to Bangkok so that they could all commemorate this wonderful and magical event!

Our first party was located abroad a cruise. It was so big that it even had an escalator on it. The drinks were plenty; the people were many! I had a great opportunity to show this group of fantastic people the miracles iPad magic can produce! A particular Indian lady was so astonished by my magic that she proposed for a photo to be taken with me.

Magic transcends cultural boundaries. I am extremely grateful that I am blessed with the skill sets that I possess to bring about happiness and satisfaction to my clients around the world.

Curiosity has always been intrinsic in us human beings. Magic then allows me to engage with the spectator’s curiosity by showing them a spectacle that they will never forgot for the rest of their life. I am thus able to mould and shape the way they think about reality. Oh, I forgot to mention how well dressed the audience was for this event!

The second part of the banquet was held at the extremely luxurious and gorgeous Kempinski Hotel. It was such a marvel! There were a great many number of chandelier lights over head while the distinguished guests were all seated upon chairs that look like frosted glass! The furnishing of the Hotel’s ballroom was such a great complement to my digital magic; it was highly elegant and classy.

My crewman and I had a fantastic time and Bangkok and I hope that you too had a fantastic week as well. Cheers!

iPad Magic in Digital Security Conference

This month, I was able to showcase my brand of classy and innovative digital iPad magic to the management and employees and NTT Communications’ corporate lunch event! This event was focused upon embracing disruptive technologies (especially in the security aspect). The company adamantly believed that their image and perception of technology is best represented by my brand of iPad magic!

What a great honour it is for me to be regarded by them as one of the best iPad magicians both within Asia and around the world. In fact, the client wanted to book me on the month of December back in 2016, however, I was unfortunately unavailable.

Yet despite the odds, they still insisted on acquiring my service as an iPad magician because they said that they only want to hire the best. I was extremely touched by their gesture.

So I packed my bags and booked a flight together with my crew Elijah, as well as our newest member on our team, Anderson. It is truly a privilege to be able to fly abroad with them!

The crowd during the event was highly pleasant and enthusiastic. Their reactions during the performance were good and they definitely enjoyed the moment when I "hacked" into their minds with the iPad app I created.

Moreover, the service and hospitality provided by our clients were first-class. We treated each other with great respect and at that moment during the event, we were not bonded simply by a business transaction, but rather, by something more. They even had a green room prepared for us before the show. It was a great pleasure performing for NTT Communications and I hope that they enjoyed by performance. In fact, the clients, of whom hired my services for this event told me that the show was worth the wait!

Apart from the show, I had a great time exploring the streets of Hong Kong with my team! We visited quite a number of cool and quirky cafes that sold some pretty delicious local food.

My team and I also scaled Hong Kong’s very own Victoria Peak! The scene was breath-taking and the trip was definitely a memorable one!

I would love to go back to Hong Kong once more and maybe spread my love for magic abroad other international boundaries as well, like Australia ;) !

International iPad Magician Wows Crowd at Hong Kong Fintech Challenge

This week, I was invited to showcase my brand of interactive and creative iPad magic for the people of Hong Kong during Fintech Challenge. This event was organised by Citi and PWC, both companies of which are highly renowned throughout the international business community. The event is aimed at exploring possible disruptive Fintech apps. I was very pleased to be invited to this event; the magic that I was about to perform is not your run-of-the-mill close-up magic. I intend to show them what a brilliant piece of entertainment customised iPad magic is

iPad magic is different from traditional magic in many ways! Digital magic has a slant towards innovation and creativity. These concepts align themselves very much to the themes and mottoes of top companies around the world. Thus, iPad magic, when presented with great flair and dexterity, would appeal greatly to this group of intellectual business intelligentsia.

The magic that I showcased was customised to suit the theme of Fintech Challenge – Instant online shopping. I wanted to bring out and accentuate the possibilities and convenience on how online shopping can benefit the general population. iPad magic is able to do just that. Imagine being able to produce anything that you desire on the screen of your digital tablet and pull it right out with just your fingertips, would not that be convenient?!

I had a great time performing for the crowd at Fintech Challenge in Hong Kong and so did they. Hopefully, I will have another opportunity of providing luxurious and sleek digital magic for their events in the future!

Wedding Proposal Surprise with Magic

Last week has been a really an amazing week for me! On Thursday evening, I received a call from a guy named Alfred. Over the phone, he told me that he wanted to use my skills as a magician to propose to his girlfriend by the waters of Clarke Quay. How sweet is that! Alfred wanted it to be covert, clandestine even, because he wanted the element of surprise on that sacred day itself. Never in my life have I done such an incredible thing. Imagine, using magic to alter the destinies of two distinct and separate individuals. I felt as if I was given the sacred task of joining the two meanders of the river. I gladly accepted his proposal and whipped out my tools and weapons for the conquest for a man’s true love.

On Saturday, I met up with Alfred within Central Mall at Clarke Quay during which he passed me the thing that is the most precious for the evening – his proposal ring. I was pretty shocked yet happy at the same time; to think that a man would entrust something of that great a value and significance to me! It then came to me that the man had placed his trust in me and that I have earned it through years and years of good service and branding; it is something that cannot be achieve without effort and good business ethics. I held on tight to the ring for I fear that its being loss might mean the end of the world, for me, and for the both of them.

What a beautiful ring!

Then came the great scheme! I armed with the ring, pretended to be a street magician on the streets. I showed the crowd a couple of amazing miracles. I was stalling for time. Even though I might not look like it, I was pretty nervous for the proposal. I slowly inched my way towards Alfred and his girlfriend, of whom have just arrived, where the both of them were leaning by the rails of the river, admiring the night lights of Singapore Clarke Quay. I clenched my fist and approached them and asked them if they wanted to see something amazing. Alfred, with his brilliant Oscar-worthy acting, said yes and pretended that we were strangers, both of whom, on surface, have just met each other for the first time!

Then came the big reveal!  I pulled out a wooden box, of which comprises the ring, and handed it to Alfred. He immediately showed it to the crowd and without any hesitation, went down on his knees and proposed in front of a huge crowd – will you marry me?

The crowd, having understood that this was a planned situation, started going wild, many of them clapping and cheering, hoping that Alfred and his girlfriend would come to a happy ending! The girlfriend was so appalled by the sudden proposal that she started tearing and smiling at Alfred in disbelief!

This was the moment of magic!

Alfred’s girlfriend, tiptoed her way in front of Alfred, and caressed his hands with great joy and tenderness. She had said yes!!! Everyone was elated to see Alfred’s plan had worked and everyone cheered for them as they held each other in their arms before us!

I am glad that magic has brought happiness to the both of them! It has brought me tremendous pleasure partaking in this great and fantastic proposal! Moments like this pushes me forward in my journey as a magician! I hope that this story was a pleasant read! Cheers!

A Night of Wonder with China Unicom!

Last Friday, I was given a fantastic chance to perform for one of the world’s most well established networking companies – China Unicom! Yet, what better way to connect and interact with the clients than the use of marvellous close-up magic! Yet this was not your run of the mill corporate show. The diners, a pleasant and enthusiastic bunch of people, flew all the way from China just so that they could attend this wonderful evening filled with exquisite food and wonderful Magic!

The ability to perform magic has always been a well cherished attribute of mine. Interactive magic has a way with people – it allows me to break cultural and language barriers. China Unicom has given me a huge honour, to not only perform magic for these wonderful people but also to display my bilingual language prowesses!

Apart from the magic, the diners that I have interacted with during the event were extremely cordial, and polite. I had as much fun performing as they did experiencing it!

Yet, interestingly, the highlight of the event was my performing for China Unicom’s General Manager. You should have seen his reactions when I vanished the entire deck of cards! He enjoyed my show so much that he requested a selfie with me on the spot! This made my day. I hope everyone had an enjoyable week as I had had!

It’s all done with Smoke & Mirrors, how else?

Magic has always given me numerous opportunities in making new friends while at the same time, relish the vigour and pleasure of life! Last week, I was honoured with a wonderful chance to perform for a pleasant bunch of nice and beautiful people at Singapore’s very own Smoke and Mirrors rooftop bar. The scene at the bar was gorgeous and short of a word – breath-taking! The music was cool - one had the tendency to order a drink too many at this fantastic place - the ambiance was terrific; this was further accentuated with the fine furnishing and lights that the bar has meticulously embellished. Brilliant! Overlooking the skyline of Singapore; this has got to be one of my favourite places to perform!

This event was a networking session for Visa Group. I had a fantastic evening interacting with the crowd, of whom exhibited great enthusiasm and energy when I showed them some of the digital wonders on my iPad. These guys could not believe their eyes when I caused a solid object to materialised from a virtual space!

Magic at a networking session is always a good idea. The magic helps create a conversation topic for the guests and allows them to ease into natural conversation. 

It has been a memorable and truly unforgettable experience performing at Smoke & Mirrors. I highly recommend a visit or two to this rooftop bar. Hopefully, I would be able to perform here once more in the near future!

CUSTOMIZED IPAD MAGIC LAUNCH FOR FORD HONG KONG

On the 7th of April, I was presented a brilliant opportunity to showcase my fresh and innovative brand of iPad magic at Ford’s Kowloon Bay Showroom. The performance was a customised one; I was given the honourable task of unveiling Ford’s showroom at this spectacular opening ceremony. In the performance, I shared about Ford's past, present and future.

Spirits were high everywhere, and the people involved were charmingly pleasant. Although the preparation process was a complicated and perplexing one, it was an absolute delight to have cooperated with the Ford Team and those that were involved in the event.

What struck me the most was a compliment given by the CEO of Inchscape – he told me that this launch was the best that he has ever seen - it was interactive, entertaining and very informative!! Compliments like this make my day; it fuels my drive towards becoming a better magician.

Digitised roving magic was very well received by those who have attended the Ford Opening ceremony. The reactions from the audience were simply amazing. You should have seen the face of awe and fascination when a sponge ball materialised from the iPad’s screen! I am glad that magic allowed me to provide individual’s a sense of hope and wonder in their life.

Volkswagen meets digital magic! iPad Magic for VW's 10th Anniversary

I was given a fantastic opportunity to perform for Volkswagen’s 10th anniversary! The atmosphere and ambiance was brilliant, the crowd – pleasing and enthusiastic – responded and received my performance with much energy and vigour. Magic allowed me to transcend and surpass age gaps and effectively performing for the diverse audience. The beautiful thing about magic is that it does not require fancy words nor complicated paraphernalia in order to create a profound sense of wonder. A slight wave of the hands; the casting of a shadow, allows me to unlock the most mystical of cabbalistic portals. People enjoy a great time with magic; and so do I.

Incidentally, I was given a special request to perform for the upper management of Volkswagen Company (both international and Singapore). It was exhilarating moment and very memorable. The audience (especially the Germans) possessed a great sense of humour that added tremendous zest and colour to the wonderful evening.

I also incorporated digital magic into my performance where I made a car appear out of the iPad. A girl even told his Dad in a high-pitched voice trembling with excitement: “He is the real Zach King!!”. That made me laugh!!

I enjoyed my night thoroughly at the showroom and I hoped that the organisation and the audience felt the same way too!!

Relishing Tech Saturday!

Magic has always allowed me to form incredible bonds with others despite the differences in age or language. Last weekend, I was given a fantastic opportunity to do just that at Tech Saturday!

Tech Saturday is an event where technophiles throughout the island gather to experience the latest and coolest tech-exhibitions. Amongst the VR stations and interactive robots, I was given the spotlight on stage, where members of the audience were able to witness the eye-popping visuals that iPad Magic has to offer. I had a fantastic time interacting with a particular child, of whom, bravely volunteered to come on stage with me. His reactions were unforgettable; all the giggling, laughing and clapping from the crowd made a positive impression upon the both of us. What was truly magical for me as a magician was the experience I had with my audience.

Tech Saturday exemplified the dawn of the age of technology. Traditional forms of conjuring – rabbits and top hats – are gradually rendered obsolete. I believe that only by converging the media, the arts and technology onto a single point can we truly discover the finer side of magic while ensuring that the art of magic remains fresh, exciting and innovative.

iPad Magic in Vietnam: Intercontinental Saigon

Xin Chao! (Good Day in Vietnamese!)

My team and I just got back not too long ago from Vietnam. It was an amazing experience performing in Vietnam for the wonderful sales force conference of Experian. The venue of the show was in Intercontinental Saigon, and it was gorgeous. 
 

The guests were really thrilled to see how I combined technology and magic to create wonders. And they were amazed by the presentations brought forth to them.

My team and I did a fantastic job entertaining the guests and that the response from the client were very positive! It is always a nice pat on the back when the reviews are good.

As this was our first time in Vietnam, we took a couple more days to explore the area and immense in their culture. Saigon is an amazing place with wonderful people and food.

Can't wait to be back!

Asia's Top iPad Magician in India

On 9th of April, Asia's Top iPad Magician, Alexander Y flew to India, Jaipur to entertain distinguish guest of Willis Carrier Club dealer’s event and Toshiba Dealers Meet. He was invited to perform for a cocktail reception to showcase his amazing iPad Magic.

When we first arrived at Fairmont hotel, Jaipur, we were graciously greeted by the hotel staff. The hotel staff were so hospitable they even toured us around the grounds of the hotel and explained why the hotel was built in the shape of a palace! We were in awe when we saw how beautiful the hotel was.

On the first night, Alexander performed for Willis Carrier Club. He started his opening act and left his audiences speechless, even the client told him “You have really pursued the right path in life as a magician!”

Alexander then moved on to the next group of audiences. He started pulling objects out of his IPad such as his sharpie, sponge balls, and even transferred an X from his iPad to his spectator’s hands!

He soon established his presence there as a magician and people were crowding around him to watch him work his magic! It ended off with a thunderous applause and the events manager looked forward to seeing him again the next day to perform for Toshiba Dealers meet!

On the second night, Alexander arrived at the event location an hour earlier. He walked around the dining area, preparing for the guests to arrive, and striking conversations with the waiters and waitresses. A few minutes later, Alex was greeted by a guest who excitedly requested for a magic trick after getting great feedback about his magic! He was astonished when Alexander was able to predict the card he was thinking of.

After the guests started streaming in the ballroom, Alexander approached a group of Indians and performed his full repertoire of iPad Magic. One of the Indians shrieked when Alexander made a coin appear underneath his watch! He carried on wowing the crowd with his professionally designed iPad magic and ended the night with a round of applause from the spectators and smiles on their faces! Throughout his night of performing, people genuinely were genuinely impressed with his performance and a lot of them even requested to take selfies knowing he is the celebrity of the event!

It was an amazing event and experience for Alexander and his team! It was truly a blessing to be flown around to perform magic!

Fostering Memories With IPad Magic At Malaysian Food Street

On the 29th of March, I was given the pleasure to perform for Commscope Solutions, one of Singapore’s communication networking companies, at Malaysian Food Street, Resort World Sentosa! I figured, what better way to engage the employees of the company, than the use of digital magic.

Malaysian Food Street is a wonderfully adorned and embellished area undisturbed by pop culture; it is furnished with traditional coffee-shop benches and nostalgic signboards where authentic dishes of the past embraces this modern generation of ours.

Close-up digital magic transcends both cultures and ethnicity.  Despite the differences in cultural practices and beliefs, magic allows me to bridge a psychological and emotional connection with my audience. Unlike conventional stage magic, where magic is but an expression of the performer’s artistry, close up magic allows the magician to interact and engage with the spectators on an intimate level – something that the magician is unable to accomplish thoroughly on stage.

Magic has always been something special to me. The flip of a card, the click of the fingers creates amazing memories both for me and my audience. These moments are the ones that I especially cherish and enjoy.

Regardless of the toil and effort that precedes the performance, the opportunity to witness a smile of wonder and curiosity is the best reward for me as a magician!

Gotham City Building: Atlas Bar Gala Opening

I would think that if Bruce Wayne is real, and in Singapore, he would probably own a building like this:

Who knows, maybe he does exist.

There is a really swell bar inside this building called Atlas Bar and I was invited to perform my magic that evening. Upon entering the building, you immediately get a sense of luxury and posh. They serve great gins and the vibe is very much like the Great Gatsby.

iPad Magic on Stage For Gala Dinner in Hong Kong

In January, Alexander and his team were specially flew to Hong Kong for a Gala dinner. This gala dinner was to celebrate the company's high growth in 2016. Which that in mind, they wanted a show that is never seen before as well as showcase their company.

The crowd was immensely engaged by Alexander's sleek style of iPad Magic. They went wild when he "painted" the name of their company on his iPads.

After it was painted, Alexander changed it to their official logo and pulled it out. 

This sequence was particularly enjoyable for the crowd because it fostered a strong sense of identity for them. Alexander was commended by the board of directors after the performance!
