Esplanade Presents: If You Can Imagine - iPad Theatrical Magic Show (10 Fun Facts)

If You Can Imagine plays for its final 2 runs for Esplanade this coming Sunday (2nd June) at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

The previous run last Sunday was received with fantastic reception from laypeople, magicians and people in the arts.

From “If You Can Imagine” - Starry Night

Here are 10 fun facts about the show:

  1. Total number of iPads used in this show is 5. Alexander owns 6 iPad Pros, 2 iPad Minis, 3 iPhones and 1 iPad Air.

  2. The concept of this show to Esplanade was shared in the early 2018, but because Flipside festival went for a revamp in 2018, they did not have any magic acts involved. The whole discussion from concept to reality took 1 year and 6 months.

  3. Alexander’s Virtual x Reality (2015) was his first magic performance under Esplanade’s programming. Thereafter, Flipside had magic consecutively from 2016 and 2017, and stopped in 2018. And Alexander’s If You Can Imagine and Elephant in the Room is the first magic performances after the refresh.

  4. In the act, “The Three Kingdoms”, Alexander uses 2 lighters for the same type of magic effect, one at the start where he was recounting on his lonely childhood and one at the finale of his performance where he found peace. This is a subtle addition to hint that though the magic was the same, the effect it had on him was different.

  5. In the original ending of “If You Can Imagine”, Alexander would sit on his chair, and die. But after much discussion, it was modified because it needed a “family-friendly” ending.

  6. The first version of the opening act, “Miser’s Dream”, debut in Saudi Arabia’s Cisco Connect Conference in 2016. Back then it only used 1 iPad. In this current rendition, it uses 4 iPads.

  7. In his closing piece, except for the psychologist, Alexander refers to his actual friends when he talks of a lawyer who wants to be a musician, a doctor that wants to be a painter and a psychologist who wants to just do magic. The psychologist is a subtle reference to himself.

  8. The inspiration for Alexander’s “Starry Night” is a subtle homage to Alexander’s favorite book, “The Little Prince”. He makes 3 subtle reference of it in that act. The first is where he used an imagery close to the The Little Prince’s Planet and the other 2 is for you to find out :)

  9. In totality, Alexander took 2 months of programming the 5 acts that involved the iPad. He then took another 1.5 months for rehearsals.

  10. In his 4th Act called “Society”, Alexander laments about Society telling him to “Stop living in his mom’s basement and doing magic” was an actual thing that was said to him on a dinner date who found out that he was doing magic for a living. Despite knowing that Alexander has a Master’s Degree from NUS, she decided to scoff at him for simply doing what he loves.

  11. (Bonus Fact) Alexander will have to change his 2nd Act “Cocktails of Imagination” to another act for this coming Sunday’s performance because of NEA regulations that does not allow him to distribute unsealed drinks. But he promises that another act of the same theme will be replacing it.

Alexander will play again this Sunday, 2nd June

Venue: Esplanade- Concourse

Time: 6.30pm and 7.30pm

Hope to see you there!

Star Struck at Bvlgari: Magic for Zoe Tay, Fann Wong and Sam Willows

I previously spoke about how performing magic for luxury brands and how it requires a good fit in terms of image of the magician and brand as well. And it brings me great joy (and a nice pat on my own back) to be able to perform for Bvlgari again. This time, at their prestigious Pop Up Event where they invited Zoe Tay, Fann Wong and Sam Willows.

On top of top Singapore celebrities and A-listers, there were many socialites who attended the event. The iPad Magic performed had to be of high calibre and classy.

It can be quite nerve wrecking to perform for celebrities, and I actually had to regroup myself before approaching them. At the end, I realised that magic broke the ice and they react like how most people would too.

An excellent night it was, a truly wonderful privilege to share my magic :)

Bvlgari x Cortina Watch Launch with iPad Magic

It is always a true honour to be handpicked as part of the entertainment for prestigious brands (Past luxury clients include: LVMH, Roger Dubuis, Mercedes Benz, Yu Li Fine Jewelry, Moet & Chadon and many more.

It is a testament to the quality and image that these brands are looking for especially when the magic involves their products. A great deal of thought and discussion happens before a performer is entrusted with their brand.

I was very lucky to be engaged by Bvlgari to showcase their Serpenti and Lucea watches. In this engagement, Bvlgari wanted to have the guests experience more than just magic, they wanted the magic to come alive and for me to showcase their watches.

I crafted specialize apps on the iPad and devised methods to make the watches appear out of the iPads.

Tempur X Tatler: 1 Year Anniversary at Tempur

One year ago, I did an opening piece for Tempur's opening. The crowd loved it, and they loved how it fit into their Weightless Campaign. (See video below).

This year, when I got a call from the Tempur marketing team with regards to their 1st year anniversary, I was overjoyed!

In collaboration with Singapore Tatler, Tempur had a smaller celebration and invited the guests from Tatler to experience the weightlessness.

Wanting to do something different from them, I designed a sequence with my iPad to showcase the weightless motif and give the guest an opportunity to feel the Tempur Material (which is commissioned by NASA to be used in Space).

Here what the Tempur and Tatler team had to say:

"Thank you Alexander and helping us out!
It was a real pleasure meeting you and thank you for the brilliant show! Looking forward to working with you again soon.

Daniel (Singapore Tatler)"

"Hi Alex,
The customized acts were very cool, thank you!

Janet (Tempur)"

Have you experienced Tempur Weightless-ness?

Signing off,

Alexander Yuen (Asia iPad Magician)

iPad Magic on Singapore National Day

Singapore's 51st National Day was special for the clients of The Knightsbridge Clinic and Southbridge Aesthetics Clinic. The guests were welcomed to an exclusive party where they were treated to an array of canapes, magic and dance.

To create a befitting atmosphere for the guests, I was specially invited to this exclusive party to perform my brand of iPad Magic. Like a true blue patriotic Singaporean, I took the liberty to dress up in my national colours of Red and White. While the base colour is white, I added subtle hints of red to create a sleek and stylish look.

Interactive iPad Magic

As the iPad Magician for the event, the agenda was to entertain the guests with magic, and to create an atmosphere of fun and excitement. I performed illusions that I custom created for the guests on that evening that were immensely well received.

The iPad Magic offers endless possibilities for you and your event. For this event, I custom created an app where gift vouchers were given to the guests through the iPad. This created excitement for the guests as I was not only able to create magic on the iPad, but also added value to the magic by incorporating a corporate gift for the guests.

The voucher app looked something like this:

This is simply one of the many ways magic can enhance, add a different texture and increase the value of your event! To find out more, drop me an email at:

Chinese Speaking iPad Magician in Singapore

The great thing about growing in Singapore is that almost everyone has to learn 2 languages in school. For me, it is Mandarin and English. English being my first language and Mandarin is my mother tongue.

This is great because I am often booked for shows and events where I have to perform my iPad magic in a Chinese (or Mandarin). The ability to supplement my magic with language is adds a different dimension to the experience of watching the iPad magic.

I can lead my audiences with stories through text and animations through the iPad and magic through sleight of hand. Compared to illusionists who performs old school illusions boxes after boxes, this modern and engaging form of magic is highly sought after.

If you are looking for a mandarin or chinese speaking iPad magician, drop me a text!
